New York City based actor Jae Woo has taken on the leading role of King Mongkut in Beef and Boards Theatre’s production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “The King and I”.

First produced in 1951, the role of King Mongkut was originated by award-winning actor, Yul Brynner. Since then, the show has been staged all across the country, with countless big name actors and Broadway veterans taking on the role of the King. Despite the challenges of living up to such a monumental and well-recognized character, Woo has successfully caught the hearts of audiences at Beef and Boards with his rendition of the King.

Woo’s ability to find the full humanity in a character that is otherwise often portrayed with a generalized stubborn and angry demeanor is what sets him apart. With a perfect blend of humor and stoicism, his performance guides the audience through a rollercoaster of emotions.

Surprisingly, this is Woo’s first professional musical. More commonly known for his work in Shakespearean theater, in recent years Woo has transitioned his interest towards contemporary stories. Rather predictably, he has been successful in doing so. Most notably, last year he was nominated for his role of Atung in Central Square Theater’s “The Chinese Lady” at The Boston Theater Critics Association’s Elliot Norton Awards. With such accolades under his belt, Woo is set out to be a talent to look out for.

The show at Beef and Boards has had sold out performances since its opening. However, there are still a limited number of seats available until its final showing on May 19th. If you happen to be in Indianapolis this month, check out this spectacular classic on their stage!
