Oscar Stone, a Gemologist accredited by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is in the business of jewelry. Being accredited by the GIA simply means he has certified knowledge in gemology. He understands gems, but probably more importantly, diamonds. He runs high-end retail stores that specialize in bespoke jewelry. He helps design Grillz to custom rings, pendants, and more. His success strings from his passion for customization.
Customization is what makes his jewelry unique. He takes pride in creating pieces that meet his clients’ visions. Oscar Stone “ensures a seamless transition from fantasy to reality” for his clients. His clients, after all, are why he’s in business. Creating expressive high-end pieces in-house is a tradition that keeps customers coming back, and gets new ones interested. Stone understands this, “Truly learn [how] to sell your product or service. Not only do you need to understand the tangible product but you need to understand the culture of the industry.” He said.
Oscar Stone is no novice to jewelry. He was immersed in it throughout his childhood. His parents immigrated to the United States in the 1980s and that’s when his family started in jewelry. Growing up, Stone witnessed the ins and outs of running a jewelry business. He learned little by little, and at the ripe age of 20, he had that pivotal conversation with his father and decided to ultimately take the business on.
He was motivated by potential success and he has exceeded expectations. Oscar Stone overcame several obstacles, like hitting rock bottom when his store was “looted and wrecked on the inside during the high of the George Floyd [protests],” he said. But he didn’t give up. He has several retail locations in New York City, and another large store opening soon. His business is different from others in that not only does he create highly sought-after customized pieces, but he does business honestly–unlike many jewelers.
Stone describes himself as stubborn, relentless, and persistent. He won’t stop at his first successes–this is one business owner who we will see more of in the future. He lives by the mantra of Tampa Bay Buccaneers Head Coach, Bruce Ariens: “No risk it, no biscuit.”
