Reports say that Shakira will be put on trial in Spain for tax fraud. A judge ruled on September 27 that the Columbian music star will be tried in Spain on six counts of tax fraud. This was reported by the Associated Press and NBC News. The trial will take place in Esplugues de Llobregat, a town near Barcelona. The date it will start has not yet been set.
Spanish prosecutors said that Shakira didn’t pay up to 14.5 million euros in taxes between 2012 and 2014. This led to the singer being charged with tax fraud in 2018. Shakira’s official home was in the Bahamas, but the prosecution says she spent more than half of that time in Spain, where her ex-boyfriend Gerard Piqué plays professional soccer, and that she should have paid taxes there.
The singer has denied the accusations, and her rep said in a statement to Elle that she has “always cooperated with and followed the law, showing excellent behaviour as a person and a taxpayer.” In her October cover story for the magazine, the singer said that these were “false charges.”
Shakira has been in the news lately for a number of things, like her dramatic breakup with Gerard Piqué. The couple, who had been married for 11 years and had two boys, said in a joint statement that they were no longer together. “We’re sorry to have to tell you that we’re getting a divorce. We ask that our privacy be respected because the safety of our kids is the most important thing to us.”
