On Thursday, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will meet with the presidents of Turkey and Ukraine in Ukraine. They are Tayyip Erdogan and Volodymyr Zelenskiy. The two leaders will talk about their worries about grain exports and the nuclear power project in Zaporizhzhia.
When Erdogam and Zelensky met for the first time after the invasion,
At this conference, Erdogan and Zelensky will see each other for the first time since the Russia-Ukraine crisis. After their talks, the three presidents will hold a joint news conference in Lviv. Since the invasion, Lviv has been a major stop for Ukrainians trying to get to Europe.
The U.N. head went to the port of Odessa on the Black Sea.
After the agreement reached last month with the help of the UN, U.N. Chief Guterres, who arrived in Lviv on Wednesday, plans to go to the Black Sea port of Odesa, where grain exports have started. On Saturday, he will go to the Joint Coordination Center in Istanbul. The centre is made up of Russian, Ukrainian, Turkish, and UN officials who watch over the export of grain from Ukraine.
Turkey’s Erdogan and Vladimir Zelensky meet
Erdogan’s office said it would talk to foreign governments about how to increase grain exports and end the fighting between Russia and Ukraine. During his meeting with President Zelensky, the President of Turkey will also talk about “all areas” of the relationship between Ankara and Kiev.
The Turkish view on the invasion
Officials in Turkey say that their refusal to join the West in putting sanctions on Russia has helped their efforts to mediate. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has been criticised by Turkey, and Russia has given Turkey weapons, like drones, to fight back.
Zaporizhzhia is home to a nuclear power plant.
Both Russia and Ukraine have said that the other has fired shells at a nuclear power plant in eastern Ukraine. Moscow says that the place where Russian soldiers are is at the start of a “special military operation.” The building is still being run by Ukrainian technicians.
A statement from Russia says that Sergey Shoigu and Guterres, who were both in Ukraine in April, talked about what needs to be done to keep the nuclear power plant safe.
Inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are supposed to go from Kyiv to Zaporizhia. However, Russia said that the mission through Kyiv was too dangerous.
