There has never been more demand from the general public for a Devil Wears Prada sequel—blame Anne Hathaway’s “incidentally amazing” 40th birthday celebration. The cast of the 2006 blockbuster reunited on Zoom in 2021 to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the movie and raise money for charity, sparking much speculation about the whereabouts of the Runway staffers in the years following Andy’s decision to throw her Sidekick into a Parisian fountain and sell her Chanel pirate boots on eBay. Does Andy now work for The Guardian? Has Nigel ever managed to escape Miranda’s control? Has Emily become familiar with the body-positive movement?
Cut to January, when Hathaway—before her transformation into a bombshell—posted on Instagram wearing an ensemble that was unmistakably Ms Sachs-esque: a flowery Valentino minidress with a prim collar, Wolford tights, and a pair of hefty Giuseppe Zanotti Morgana platform boots. Then, in a chocolate-colored Kors coat that you could easily picture Andy wearing to exit a subway station in the year 2006 with Madonna’s “Jump” playing in the background, Hathaway was seated next to Anna Wintour in the front row at Michael Kors’ spring/summer 2023 show this September thanks to a PR genius.
Hathaway, for her part, ruled out a sequel during an appearance on The View earlier this month. “I simply believe that movie was in a different era—now that everything is so digital, and that movie is focused on the idea of manufacturing a tangible object, it’s just—really it’s different,” the speaker said. However, even she acknowledged that she was curious about how the characters played by Lauren Weisberger would interact again. It’s tempting to imagine that Andy and Emily are on their way to Italy to pick up Stanley Tucci from a restaurant when Miranda needs her coffee and is somewhere in Europe. Although it’s tempting, I don’t believe it will happen.
However, Emily Blunt is more upbeat. The actor acknowledged she’d be thrilled to reprise her part as the most vicious PA in fashion during her own time on The View while promoting her recently released Spaghetti Western-inspired series, The English. I would do it in a heartbeat simply to play with those guys one more. “I mean, the green eyeliner was so terrifying, it had to get another outing, and the fashion—we adored it. It’s great fun. (Famously, during Felicity Blunt’s wedding to John Krasinski in 2010, four years after The Devil Wears Prada debuted in theatres, Blunt introduced Tucci to Felicity; the two subsequently wed.) How about Streep? She hasn’t said anything about it thus far, but history has shown that Miranda has the last word in all matters pertaining to the Runway.
