Fair warning: Emma D’Arcy’s glamorous Golden Globes moment ends with tears. The actress from “House of the Dragon” cried the most beautiful cry we’ve ever seen at the 2023 Golden Globe Awards on January 10. A single glistening teardrop escaped from their eye in a matching hue of blue, changing their trademark short hair from a fiery red to a deep azure.
According to D’Arcy’s makeup artist Holly Silius, the iconic director John Waters’s “Cry Baby” movie served as a major source of inspiration for this vulnerable appearance. In a news release, Silius stated, “I always go back to these raw images for personal inspiration of revolt and creating your own way. I studied him for my dissertation at university.
After collaborating with Emma and their stylist, Rose Forde, Silius was convinced that the idea would be intellectual, expressive, and stylish. “I knew Emma would seamlessly collaborate with them on the details, owning this look,” said the author.
Silius utilised a combination of Pop PowderGel Eyeshadow ($22) and Shimmer GelGloss ($25) to create this kind of artistry on the red carpet while allowing the eyes to appear a little more naturally. Silius also used Shiseido products to help improve the skin’s luminosity. I let the makeup to organically sink into the creases since I enjoy the look of worn-in makeup while maintaining pristine skin.
Silius used the Kajal InkArtist Shadow, Liner, Brow Pencil ($25), dragging the pigment down and applying additional gloss on top to create the eye-catching tear. Together with D’Arcy, Silius drew inspiration from punk and contemporary romance, blending the tenderness of the face makeup with the edginess of the tearful eyes. D’Arcy was art in motion on the red carpet as they wore their new hair colour. Continue reading to learn how they used their final look to add drama.
